1D Dislocations Paper Wins Ken Hass Award From APS Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics

The American Physical Society (APS) Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP) selected my recent paper published in ACS Macro Letters for the 2016 Ken Hass Outstanding Student Paper Award. The paper sets an upper bound on the obtainable strengths of semi-crystalline polymer fibers like polyethylene. Even though the carbon-carbon backbone bonds of polyethylene can hold very high stresses without breaking, fibers will fail at much lower stresses because chains slip past each other within the crystal. Chains slip by forming 1D dislocations at their chain ends, which can be described by a simple analytic theory described in our letter.
